Otter site tries to conform with WCAG 2.2 level AA. I think contrast is very important when it comes to accessability. Low contrast sucks and makes it harder or impossible to read for elderly people, people with bad screens or small screens or just simply being in sunlight.

You can make a pretty website that has a high enough contrast and a decent text-size, so why screw it up?
